Lauren received her doctorate degree in Special Education (concentration in autism and related disabilities) at UBC. She is also a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst.

Lauren has been working with individuals with ASD/related challenges and their families since 1997. For the past twelve years Lauren has focused her research and clinical work on supporting families of young children with developmental disabilities and severe food refusal behaviour. Her master’s thesis titled, “A Family Centered Positive Behavior Support Approach to the Amelioration of Food Refusal Behavior” is published in the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions. Lauren’s dissertation research is an extension of this study. The purpose of her dissertation research was to broaden assessment procedures beyond child problematic feeding behaviour to include parent-child interactions and elements of the natural meal routine. These assessment findings were then used to design empirically supported behavioural feeding interventions that were implemented by parents in a home-based meal routine. Three families of children with autism and severe food refusal participated in the study. From 2004-2009, Lauren was a family interventionist on a NIH funded research project at U.B.C. The purpose of the study was to improve problematic home and community routines (e.g., dinner, bed-time, restaurant) for families of children with developmental disabilities and severe problem behaviour.

Before having a baby in 2010, Lauren collaborated with a local non-profit community agency of occupational therapists and speech language pathologists to develop behavioural feeding workshops for parents and professionals.

Lauren also worked as a Sessional Instructor at UBC teaching an undergraduate course titled, “Functional Assessment and Positive Behaviour Supports in School and Community Settings.”

Lauren is currently accepting families dealing with Feeding Disorders or Problem Behaviours.  Please contact Lauren Binnendyk to discuss your issues and concerns.
